Member under the microscope: Jacob Doogue
To those outside of the industry, working in the oil and gas world evokes images of grubby workers on a remote drill rig or people wearing ill-fitting suits pushing papers around. For young professionals entering the sector, nothing could be further from the truth. Analytics and technology are the new tools of the trade and collaboration and networking the skills required to harness them.
This change is represented in the Petroleum Club's shift to cater for a younger demographic through the Young Professionals Club.
“The Petroleum Club Young Professionals was established to diversify the membership and encourage younger people to contribute to the Petroleum Club,” said founding member Jacob Doogue.
The Schlumberger Account Manager who has been involved with the Club for nine months after a brief stint in Thailand enjoys meeting a range of people that you meet from different backgrounds at PCWA events.
"Not just engineers and geologists, like other more technical societies, but people from finance, legal, HR, commercial, marketing and more."
While networking initially attracted Jacob, he's stayed for the presentations.
“The type of presentations and speeches given at Club dinners about field developments, industry themes and challenges are always interesting and almost always have something that people new to the industry can learn.”
Jacob studied at the University of Western Australia and graduated with a double degree in Mechatronics Engineering and Computer Science, before beginning work with Schlumberger as a Field Engineer in Drilling and Measurements.
“During four years of working in the field, I mainly worked offshore in Western Australia on Deep Water projects, but also completed training in Siberia, the Middle East, US and worked periodically in Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand,"
“Schlumberger is a big company offering many services, which I chose to join because of their leadership and investment in technology. So far, I have worked in three areas primarily upstream areas, Drilling & Measurements, Petrotechnical Services & Consulting and now SIS – Software Integrated Solutions,” said Doogue who’s is now into his ninth year in the industry.
Jacob’s current role is as an Account Manager, to which he brings a solid technical background to understand his client’s need.
"My role is to coordinate between clients, our technical teams and Schlumberger management to ensure that clients receive the solutions that they need."
Outside of work-life, Jacob has three young children who he and his wife enjoy getting outdoors with as much as possible on weekends.
“We recently finished up the season of Nippers – Surf Life Saving - at Cottesloe, which is a great way to spend summers in Perth,” said Doogue.
When he gets a moment free, Jacob also loves nothing more than taking a ride on his 1800cc cruiser motorbike through the hills on weekends.
