Mathew Baskerville – Director, Fivebyfive Engineering
Mathew Baskerville is the Director and Founder of Fivebyfive Engineering, an industry professional
with 14 years under his belt.
For over five years, he has been a dedicated participant in the Energy Club WA's Next Gen program, finding it a valuable way to contribute to the industry's future. Through the Club's events, he stays connected to the energy community and keeps his finger on the pulse with the latest news and advancements.
Mathew's career began in 2009 with a solid foundation in chemical engineering from Curtin University.
This launched him into a year at Bureau Veritas, followed by a three-year secondment with Oracle Risk Consultants working as a part of the Gorgon Upstream Facilities Team Project.
Driven by a desire for fresh perspective, Mathew took a bold step to venture outside the industry for
a year as a waiter in Melbourne. This seemingly unrelated experience proved to be a turning point.
Returning to Perth in 2016, he rejoined the field with renewed focus, working at Inherent Safety Risk
before landing a role at Genesis Oil and Gas (now Genesis Energies). This break not only refreshed him
but helped him define his career aspirations.
Through four years of dedication at Genesis, Mathew rose to Principal Risk and Safety Engineer, his
career trajectory perfectly aligned with his goals. He then leveraged his expertise at Shell for two
years as the Prelude Safety Case Engineer.
The pivotal moment arrived in late 2022 when Mathew's entrepreneurial spirit took hold. He founded Fivebyfive Engineering which focuses on the development of safety cases for major gas producers
and built a team of risk and safety specialists.
Their first year was a whirlwind, navigating uncharted territory and overcoming challenges head-on.
Despite the initial turbulence, they landed strong, achieving profitability.
“I think the greatest thing I have achieved is to rescue my career when it could have easily slipped away during a rocky period in my late 20s,” Mathew said
Despite his achievements, Mathew remains grounded. He acknowledges the sacrifices his parents made for his education and credits his partner, Anna, for her
unwavering support.
While safety cases are his daily grind, Mathew's proudest accomplishment is raising his children. He shares, “I’m only able to do what I am able to do thanks to
the people around me who provide the support I need.”
He embraces challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, with his self-motivation driving him to pursue continuous improvement.
