Mark Williams, Advisory Manager - Engineering at Long Energy
Meet Mark Williams, who has been a member of Energy Club WA for the past four years. He enjoys the Club’s, “open and sharing nature of the community,” and that, “everyone is very approachable and inclusive.”
Mark has worked in the energy industry for 23 years, starting out as a Chemical Engineer. “The energy industry always appealed to me,” he explains. “Where better to have a positive impact on society than delivering such a needed commodity?”
His career has taken him from Melbourne to London, and now Perth, with roles at KBR, g3 Consulting, Genesis, and most recently Long Energy.
At Long Energy, Mark is helping expand the company’s advisory services in Western Australia. “Long Energy is an engineering design, advisory and project management service provider across the energy sector,” he says.
“Anyone who knows me will tell you, I love everything about engineering and our industry,” he says. “So much variety in projects and genuinely brilliant and helpful people from all backgrounds.”
When asked about his favourite projects, he recalls his first offshore helicopter flight and compares experiences across Victoria, Norway, and WA. “My favourite projects are always ones where I can use some creativity and connect the dots with capable people and great ideas.”
He sees purpose in giving back to the industry. “I’ve always looked to be part of professional organisations and promote our industry,” he says. He currently serves on the SPE board and is preparing for his eighth year running a presentation workshop for Women in Subsea and Energy’s Future Engineers Program.
Outside of work, Mark is happiest outdoors. Living in Margaret River, he feels no need to travel far. “I now live where I want to holiday, so not much need to go anywhere else - but I do like visitors!”
He enjoys getting hands-on with landscaping projects. “The son of a landscaper and painter, I do love creating functional outdoor spaces and getting my hands dirty and a workout in doing so,” he says. “I have no artistic capability whatsoever - that must skip a generation.”
His motivation comes from family. “My wife and kids keep me very balanced and grounded,” he said. “They provide insights and motivation to broaden my horizon from an otherwise very task-focused life.” He also finds inspiration in the problem-solving nature of engineering. “Motivation comes from learning and applying
myself to new and interesting opportunities.”
Mark’s passion for engineering and commitment to mentoring, make him a valued member of both the energy industry and the Energy Club WA community.
