Member Under the Microscope - Lee Thompson, Cape
A relatively new member of PCWA, Lee Thompson has made an impact over the past 18 months, quickly realising the value that the club brings to both individuals and companies in the oil and gas sector.
One of Lee’s most important lessons throughout his career is that people and relationships are critical to success. Through his membership, Lee has not only built on his professional network but uses the forum as a place to better understand market forces, how they impact his customers and importantly how their needs can be met.
Lee is General Manager – Strategy & Growth for Cape, responsible for growing existing contracts, and identifying new opportunities. Under his guidance, he has orchestrated Cope’s sponsorship of a number of the Petroleum Club’s industry presentations.
Throughout his career, Lee has been fortunate enough to occupy various positions around the world, including the UK, Europe, Asia and the Middle East in senior operational positions. Upon joining Cape five years ago, Lee has occupied regional management roles in the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.
Lee’s 20-year career in the oil and gas industry almost didn’t happen. Throughout his childhood, Lee aspired to be a Physical Education teacher, replete with a sports science degree Wolverhampton University in the UK. Not one to sit still, Lee still plays competitive soccer (despite somewhat ‘dodgy knees’, according to Lee). Adding to this, Lee recently completed a 200-kilometre cycle for The Ride to Conquer Cancer event and the 135-kilometre Cape to Cape walk for the zero2hero charity.
Travel is important to Lee’s family, and his career has meant that they’ve been fortunate to experience new places and new cultures. With the journey having brought them to live in Australia, Lee loves having the opportunity to watch their own interests develop. Following the advice once given to him, ‘if a door opens, you want to have a little look through it’, there’s no doubt more exciting adventures are in store for him.
