Jeremy Campbell-Wray - Regional Growth Director at Baker Hughes
Jeremy has made significant contributions to the energy and resources industry.
With a degree in mechanical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, Jeremy has amassed 20 years of experience in this field. Currently serving as the Regional Growth Director for Baker Hughes in Australia, New Zealand, and PNG, Jeremy's role spans commercial, business development, technical, and project management disciplines.
Jeremy also has a deep understanding of the strategic benefits of a sustainable and embedded Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy. He firmly believes that such a strategy can elevate a brand, create a positive Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) impact, and foster long-term talent retention within an organisation.
Jeremy has been instrumental in developing and implementing DEI programs across the Asia Pacific region, encompassing various aspects of diversity. He leads the DEI Council of Australia, New Zealand & Papua New Guinea and supports seven Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). Notably, he leads the Pride@Work ERG across the Asia Pacific, fostering accountability, awareness, and quantifiable improvements in employee engagement and talent retention.
In addition to his professional achievements, Jeremy has showcased exemplary leadership skills in the not-for-profit sector. He implemented governance models to enhance financial stability while organising large-scale community events. Jeremy's extensive experience in event management, communication strategy, and public speaking has further enriched his repertoire of skills.
"I grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and from a young age, I had a curiosity to understand how things worked,” Jeremy said.
“I would often dismantle objects and explore their inner workings, much to the annoyance of my parents. It was during my high school senior year project that I found a mentor, an electrical engineer, who introduced me to the world of engineering and encouraged me to pursue mechanical engineering."
Jeremy's career took off after he earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Penn State University. He embarked on internships, including one in Azerbaijan, which opened his eyes to the diverse and exciting nature of the industry. His first job as a wireline field engineer led him to Karratha, where he began a new chapter in his life. Over the next five years, he travelled to more than 30 countries, working on challenging projects such as an exploration drilling campaign off the coast of Kenya.
"Working in different countries exposed me to unique experiences,” he said. “From dealing with regional conflicts and US aircraft carriers stationed nearby to attending weddings on five continents, my field career was filled with incredible adventures. It also allowed me to witness breathtaking sunsets and sunrises aboard offshore rigs in the middle of the ocean."
While Jeremy cherished his time as a field engineer, he faced personal challenges and underwent a transformative journey. He realised the importance of managing stress and prioritising his mental and physical health. Moreover, he embraced his identity and came out as gay, a significant milestone in his life.
"Coming out in Karratha was an unconventional experience, but I was fortunate to have supportive colleagues,” he said. “Embracing my true self has not only improved my self-confidence but also enhanced my career. Being authentic and vulnerable at work has strengthened my relationships and made me a better professional."
Jeremy's career continued to evolve as he sought new challenges and growth opportunities. After nearly a decade with one company, he decided to take a risk and explore different sectors of the oil and gas industry. This led him to Baker Hughes, where he celebrated 10 years of service in 2023. From Subsea to Turbomachinery and Global Strategic Account Management, Jeremy has continually expanded his roles within the company.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Jeremy's career has been the opportunity to work with diverse teams and witness their growth and success. He takes pride in nurturing talent, providing mentorship, and creating an environment where individuals can thrive.
"Seeing my team members excel and achieve their goals has been incredibly fulfilling. I believe in investing in people and providing them with the tools and support they need to succeed. It's gratifying to witness their professional growth and know that I have played a part in their journey,” he said.
Looking ahead, Jeremy is excited about the potential for collaboration and partnerships in driving positive change. He aims to forge strategic alliances with like-minded organisations, industry leaders, and policymakers to address pressing challenges and find innovative solutions.
"I firmly believe that collaboration is key to overcoming the complex challenges we face,” he said. “By joining forces with other organisations and thought leaders, we can pool our expertise, resources, and insights to tackle issues such as climate change, energy access, and sustainable development. Together, we can make a greater impact."
Jeremy’s career has been marked by his unwavering dedication to the energy and resource industry, his commitment to fostering diversity and sustainability, and his relentless pursuit of making a positive impact. Through his leadership, he has brought about significant advancements in renewable energy technologies, spearheaded inclusive initiatives, and inspired others to join the sustainability movement.
As Jeremy reflects on his journey so far, he remains resolute in his mission to drive innovation, advocate for sustainable practices, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. He understands that the challenges ahead are immense, but his unwavering optimism and belief in the power of collaboration propel him forward.
"I am convinced that we have the knowledge, the resources, and the collective will to tackle the pressing issues of our time,” he said. “By harnessing the potential of diverse energy sources, embracing diversity and inclusion, and working together, we can build a future that is both prosperous and sustainable."
Jeremy is not just a leader in the energy and resource sector; he is a catalyst for change, inspiring others to envision and create a better world. With his visionary mindset and determination, he continues to pave the way for a more sustainable and equitable future for generations to come.
